Starting & Stopping Web & File Service


Starting the Server


    You need to start your AppleShare IP Web & File Server before users will be able to use any file sharing or Web services. You can start the server manually, or by setting automatic start up.

  To start the Web & File Server manually, follow these steps:
1 Open the Web & File Admin program, if it's not already open.
2 To start the Web & File Server, choose Start Web & File Server from the Web & File Admin program's Server menu.
A message tells you that the server is starting up, and disappears when the Web & File Server is running.
Note: This menu item is only available if the server is not already running. If the server is running, only Stop Web & File Server is available.


Stopping the Server


    You may need to stop the AppleShare IP Web & File Server to perform other tasks, such as to cause changes you've made to certain settings take effect. When you stop the server, you should make sure that you prevent connected users from losing unsaved information.

  To stop the Web & File Server, follow these steps:
1 Open the Web & File Admin program, if it's not already open.
2 To stop the Web & File Server, choose Stop Web & File Server from the Web & File Admin program's Server menu.
The Stop Web & File Server dialog box appears.
Note: This menu item is only available if the server is already running. If the server is not running, only Start Web & File Server is available.
3 In the Default Message section, type the number of minutes that are to elapse before the Web & File Server stops.
IMPORTANT: Users who haven't logged off by the time the Web & File Server stops will lose any information they haven't saved, so pick a time that provides adequate warning.
The first time you stop the Web & File Server, the time before the Web & File Server shuts down is 10 minutes. You can enter any number from 0 to 4094 minutes (about 68 hours).
Users who are logged on are sent the default message indicating that the Web & File Server is shutting down in the specified number of minutes, plus the additional message, if you type one.
4 Type any additional message in the Additional Message text field.
You can type approximately 199 characters. (You're prevented from typing more characters than the software on users' computers can display.)
Note: Some non-Mac OS users, users who log on via FTP, and Web site visitors cannot receive any messages.
5 Click OK.
The status of the Web & File Server changes to "Shutting Down" in the Web & File Server Activity window. Users who can receive messages are notified.
If the time you entered is greater than an hour, the warning is repeated once an hour until the final hour, every ten minutes during the final hour, and then five minutes, two minutes, and one minute before the Web & File Server stops.
Note: Users can't log on to the Web & File Server during the final five minutes, but they can visit your Web site until the Web & File Server shuts down.


Canceling a Shutdown


    If you specify that the Web & File Server is to stop (or "shut down") in a certain number of minutes, you can cancel the shutdown before it occurs.

  To cancel a shutdown, follow these steps:
1 Open the Web & File Admin program, if it's not already open.
2 Choose Cancel Web & File Server Shutdown from the Web & File Admin program's Server menu.
The status of the Web & File Server changes to Running in the Web & File Server Activity window.
Users who are logged on and who can receive messages are sent a message indicating that the shutdown has been canceled.
Note: Some non-Mac OS users, users who log on via FTP, and Web site visitors cannot receive messages.


Setting Automatic Startup


    You can make the Web & File Server start up automatically each time your computer starts up.

  To set automatic startup, follow these steps:
1 Open the Web & File Admin program, if it's not already open.
2 Choose Web & File Server Settings from the Server menu.
The Web & File Server Settings window appears, and shows the General server settings.
4 Click the "Start Web & File Server on System Startup" checkbox so that an X appears.
5 Click Save.
Your changes take effect immediately.


Disconnecting Users


    You can disconnect one or more individual users from the Web & File Server without disrupting service to other users. You might want to do this, for example, when you need to change a user's sharing privileges. You can also cancel the disconnection of users if you change your mind.

  To disconnect a user, follow these steps:
1 Open the Web & File Admin program, if it's not already open.
2 If necessary, choose Show Web & File Server Activity window from the Server menu.
The Web & File Activity window appears, and shows the names of users who are currently connected.

Select one or more users that you want to disconnect.
To select multiple users, hold down the Shift key and click.

Click the Disconnect User button to disconnect the selected users. The button looks like this:
The Disconnect Users dialog box appears.
5 Type the number of minutes you want to elapse before the selected users are disconnected and an optional message.
You can enter any time from 0 to 4094 minutes (about 68 hours).
Users who are logged on and can receive messages will see the default message indicating that they will be disconnected in the time you specified, plus the additional message, if you type one.
Note: Some non-Mac OS users and users who log on to the Web & File Server via FTP cannot receive the any messages.
6 Click OK.
Your changes take effect immediately. If you specified a number of minutes before disconnection, a scissors appears over the icon of each user that is to be disconnected.
Once you specify that one or more users is to be disconnected, you cannot stop the Web & File Server until you cancel the disconnection of users.


Cancelling User Disconnections


    You can cancel the disconnection of all users who are scheduled to be disconnected from the Web & File server.

  To cancel a scheduled user disconnection, follow these steps:
1 Open the Web & File Admin program, if it's not already open.
2 If the Web & File Activity window is not visible, choose Show Web & File Activity from the Server menu.
The Web & File Activity window appears. This window lists the names of users who are currently connected.
3 Click the Cancel User Disconnect button to cancel all disconnections.
A dialog box appears and asks if you're sure you want to cancel the user disconnection.
4 Click OK.
Users who can receive messages see a message indicating that the disconnection has been canceled.
Note: Some non-Mac OS users and users who log on to the Web & File Server via FTP cannot receive messages.
